Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc was born in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France, the son of a French father, who was an attorney, and an English mother, who was an author.
Inhis father died inleaving the family destitute, and his mother moved with Belloc to Slindon, West Sussex, where he spent most of his childhood.
The title of this collection is a nod to Belloc's first book, Verses and Sonnets (), published nearly fifty years earlier. Though his poetry went in and out of print for years, Belloc's reputation was not based on his abilities as a poet.
